IN MEMORY OF T-MODE CHAIRMAN, LAWRENCE STUCKEY

by annie may on Sun Mar 16, 2008 5:32 pm

I am deeply saddened to report the untimely passing of T-MODE Chairman, Lawrence Stuckey. Lawrence was the heart and soul of T-MODE, and he worked tirelessly for the convention to succeed and to grow into something truly unique and special.

The future of T-MODE is now uncertain. It has not been decided whether T-MODE will move forward or not. If T-MODE is to continue, it will definitely need the support of anime and gaming fans to help realize the greatness of Lawrence’s vision.

Keeping with the tradition set by Lawrence to make T-MODE a convention where anime and gaming fans have a voice, I would like to know your thoughts. Would you support T-MODE in moving forward, and if so, how? Please post your comments.

Lawrence’s Loving Wife,
Sharvonique Renee Fortune-Stuckey
T-MODE Vice-Chairman

I was genuinely sad to have received your email about Mr. Stuckey. I was in the middle of writing my story for the T-mode 2007 story contest when I read it. He was such a kind man and I'm sorry for your loss. When I was reading the message and getting really sad, Yoko Kanno's "Melody" from her CM Yoko album came on my iTunes. The singer says about how the world is a lovely place and to make a smile. Then right after that song was "Love Under the Equator" by The Captains who were at T-mode 2007. I think Mr. Stuckey would want T-mode to go on and I hope it does. I have already said that I am going to try and make every effort I can in coming. T-mode may be small but it has a lot of heart and Mr. Stuckey was a big reason for that.

In the interest of full disclosure, the last time Lawrence and I talked to one another was via PM on February 26th. This was what he had to say regarding my plan for "Anime Let's Make A Deal":

"Sorry it took me so long to get back to you. That sounds like a fantatsic idea. We will add it to this year's schedule.
Thanks and we look forward to seeing you at the con!"

I was about send him a follow-up PM when I had received news of his sudden passing. Needless to say, I was at a loss for words.
Sure, T-Mode 2007 wasn't the best anime convention, but going into 2008, it had potential- and it still does. Sharvonique, I think the best way to honor your late husband would be to take over duties as president and CEO of T-Mode and move forward. It won't be easy, but given that you've been T-Mode's cheerleader, it shouldn't be too hard for you to drum up support for your convention. Heading into the foreseeable future, are you willing to take on the duties and responsibilities that come with being in charge of a convention?

I am shocked to learn today that Lawrence Stuckey has passed away. Lawrence was a really nice guy and a friend to myself and my club/con.. and infact I had dinner with him at the AnimeCons Mailing List dinner at Katsucon 2008. I am very sad to hear of this.

Please let my club/con
(Delaware Anime Society/ Zenkaikon) know if there's anything we can do to help.

hello this is Chris, keyboardist of ArmCannon --- I want to pay my deepest sympathies to you Sharvonique - i cannot even pretend to imagine the surreal pain you are going through

I just wanted to say that Lawrence invited ArmCannon to play at tmode 2007 and, despite being a small convention, we had a total blast attending and performing -- and we ended up meeting key people and whatnot - which just goes to show: a little goes a long way - it was a weekend we will never forget

I wish you the best.

I don't even know what to say. I still can't believe it. I really enjoyed myself at T-Mode 2007. I just hope the strength of his dream continues for years to come.

I am deeply saddened to hear this news. The time that The Captains and I spent with Lawrence at T-Mode 2007 was quite memorable, both at the convention and at our impromptu post-party at the sushi bar across the way. He seemed so happy that night, so proud of what he had accomplished, it was truly inspiring. He proved that weekend that he was not only one of the hardest working anime con chairmen I've ever dealt with, but also the friendliest, hands down. Just a week ago we were discussing musical guests for this year's T-Mode, this unexpected turn of events has left me shaken. The Captains and I wish his family and friends our deepest condolences.
Best,

I found out yesterday from my friend Ficus, one of the other volunteers from the con. It was a real shock. I meant to track down Lawrence at Katsu, but never found the time, and now I really regret it.

Working with him, I really noticed how driven he was to make the con happen. You know, just throw down his credit card and get things done. In the brief time I knew him, he was a cool dude in my book. I think a great way to remember him would be to keep the con going. I know that's what he would want.

Matt and I are very sad at hearing of Lawrence's loss. Lawrence made last year's T-Mode an amazing experience for us - even though we weren't official guests, he treated us like we were, and his generosity and kindness will stay with us.

We will lend our support in any way we can, and our thoughts are with Sharvonique and her family.
